Coffee shop of the week: Vienna

FullSizeRender-5.jpgVienna Espresso Bar and Bakery  is my featured coffee shop this week. I’ve heard people say it’s Greyhouse’s rival, considering it’s right next door, and I’ve also heard others say that Greyhouse is a million times better, but I believe Vienna still deserves a spot on my blog.

Even though I’ve focused on some big chain coffee shops and currently work for one, I still feel that it’s important to support and feature the small, local coffee shops in the area. Someone’s favorite coffee shop is Vienna and after reading this post and checking it out, it might become your favorite too!

Vienna is located at 208 South St. in West Lafayette.

On their Facebook page, Vienna advertises, “We have high quality, specialized coffee drinks, smoothies, frappes, italian soda, and our famous, home made vanilla and spiced chai! Some of our delicious bakery items include cheesecake slices, baklava, tiramisu, and jumbo sized cupcakes.”

The menu can be a bit overwhelming at first, but there’s so many options.

One of my favorite things about Vienna is that they don’t charge for soy. I was in shock when I found this out because most coffee shops do. At Starbucks it costs an extra 60 cents, which I absolutely do not agree with. Why should people with milk or food intolerances or different preferences have to pay more?

Anna Monical, a barista at Vienna said that their large amount of pastry and breakfast items is what makes their coffee shop stand out. She also mentioned that they catered toward vegans, with a lot of vegan pastry options and nondairy options. She doesn’t care for sweet stuff, so she just recommended the coffee and teas. She did rave over their homemade chais and mocha cupcakes though.

Pastries line the counters and cases in Vienna.

Not only is a great, cozy place for studying (their couches are so comfy), it can also be a great place to let the world hear your voice. They advertise Open Mic Nights and poetry slams on Fridays from 8-10, if people call in and request to do it. Even though we’re in Indiana, they also have outdoor seating.

My Recommendations
  • Brown Sugar Cinnamon latte with soy: This tastes a like a brown sugar cinnamon Pop- Tarts.
  • Toasted Marshmallow latte with soy: Starbucks normally runs out of marshmallow syrup soon after summer ends and I haven’t been able to find it at very many other coffee shops.
  • Vegan Mocha Cupcakes: They really are the bomb
  • Croissants with Nutella spread. That’s right Nutella lovers you read that correctly. Come get your Nutella fix at Vienna.

So Vienna may not be as popular or well known as Greyhouse, but they still have their perks and it’s well worth a visit.
