Sound is actually really important when it comes to being a barista. There are common sounds that I hear as barista every time I work. For example: I can tell when my milk is almost done steaming or when the coffee bean are done grinding just by listening to the sounds the steamer or grinder makes.
The sounds you hear when you are steaming milk are also really important for foam consistency. We are taught to listen for a ripping sound and we are suppose to let the milk make that noise for a certain amount of seconds. If we’re making a latte it’s 3-5 seconds and if we’re making a cappuccino, it’s more around 7 seconds.
For this post, I interviewed one of my fellow baristas and had her imitate the common sounds we hear during a shift. The following sound clip has her imitation of the sound, followed by the actual sound.
